As a fan of Jenna's for the past few years, it's been so exciting watching her growth and journey on Youtube. I could not be happier that Jenna agreed to take part in the "Meet The Author" interview series on here. So dive in and get to know more about her writing process surrounding her newest novel, The Saviours Champion - My Review is below.
All hail the Cyborg queen!!!
1. What was the hardest part of the process for writing TSC?
Chapter 14 gave me a little grief, but overall, I had a lot of fun writing TSC. It sounds cheesy, but it was a joy to create. I think once you’ve gone through the entire publishing process, you have a greater appreciation for the writing portion. The release of a novel is so much more stressful than writing will ever be. Might as well enjoy it while it lasts.
2. What inspired the idea for TSC?
My own twisted imagination, per usual. But I got the idea for the concept while listening to a song – the AFI cover of Head Like a Hole, by Nine Inch Nails.
3. What two songs encompass the general vibe of TSC?
Counting Bodies Like Sheep to the Rhythm of the War Drums, by A Perfect Circle, and Alone Together, by Fall Out Boy.
4. How did publishing your first book “Eve:The Awakening” change your process for TSC?
It’s been years since I published my debut novel, and my platform has grown exponentially since then. The changes I’ve made in the publishing process were a response to that growth. With a larger platform, you’re able to do so much more, and you have access to so many more opportunities. It’s been really freeing being able to do so much more for my release now that I have a larger reach.
5. How do you balance making demands on the reader with taking care of the reader?
I don’t have any demands for my readers. I just want them to sit back and enjoy the story. All I really care about is crafting the story I want to write while simultaneously entertaining my audience.
6. What did you edit out of TSC?
Nothing. I mean, obviously substantial trimming was done, but no scenes in their entirety were removed. That’s one of the benefits of a thorough outline.
7. Do you hide any secrets in TSC that only a few people will find?
Sure. I personally think a lot of the easter eggs are pretty obvious, but you never know how people will take ‘em. There are also a number of hints regarding certain characters’ backstories; only a couple of my beta readers put those clues together, so it’ll be interesting to see if anyone figures it out after the release.
8. What one thing would you give up to become a better writer?
Broccoli, spiders, and chauvinists. I hate all those things, so they’d be easy to give up. Am I doing this wrong? Possibly. Or am I cheating the system to get what I want? I’m gonna go with that one.
9. What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?
Hiring my editor. She was worth every dime.
10. What is the most important thing about a book in your opinion?
Layered, likeable characters. I can forgive bad pacing, I can forgive plot holes, I can even potentially forgive a poorly developed story. But if you don’t give me any characters to love or root for, you’re going to lose me entirely.
11. If TSC became made into a movie (one can only hope), who would play your main characters?
A movie deal is not something I think about or hope for, so I’m not sure I can answer this question. I suppose the main characters could be played by some talented, up-and-coming unknowns. The only real answer I have is for Raphael; he looks a lot like Alfred Enoch, which makes him easy to cast.
But Jenna!! Thanks, SOOOO Much for taking part in this series.
The Saviours Champion, Jenna's second novel is NOW AVAILABLE
Tobias Kaya doesn't care about The Savior. He doesn't care that She's the Ruler of the realm or that She purified the land, and he certainly doesn't care that She's of age to be married. But when competing for Her hand proves to be his last chance to save his family, he’s forced to make The Savior his priority.
Now Tobias is thrown into the Sovereign’s Tournament with nineteen other men, and each of them is fighting—and killing—for the chance to rule at The Savior's side. Instantly his world is plagued with violence, treachery, and manipulation, revealing the hidden ugliness of his proud realm. And when his circumstances seem especially dire, he stumbles into an unexpected romance, one that opens him up to unimaginable dangers and darkness.
My Review of "The Saviours Champion"
*I received an Advanced Readers Copy in exchange for an honest review*
I’m not an overly huge fan of Fantasy books in general, I am however a huge fan of Jenna Moreci. I loved her debut novel “Eve: The Awakening” and I knew as soon as this one was released I would need to dive in immediately and indulge in all the glorious words and bloodshed this one had to offer.
This one will easily be in my TOP 5 reads for all of 2018, even with 8 months left this year.
First off, the pacing of the book was PERFECT. This is a hard dynamic to pull off, allowing the scenes to have depth, completely immerse the reader and still pushing forward. There were no parts that seemed to “lag” or slow down, or that felt forced with action, just for the reader to not feel bored. It was beautifully done, allowing the story to organically unfold and pull you in as a reader. I read through my ARC copy over a period of 3 days, while the book could easily be binged with in 24 hours, I wanted to draw it out as long as possible, mostly for selfish reasons since I knew book 2 wouldn’t be out right away.
The plot was layered in a way that you want to keep reading, while teh foreshadowing was subtle, it only added to the book in a ay that hints at whats to come, which as a reader is such a beautiful way to explore the story… I hate figuring out the main plot - twist the first few chapters into a book, this book definitely didn’t do that. The authors voice was strong throughout the book, maybe because it is her second novel, but she has truly found her voice as an author, after reading this book, I am a fan for life now, each new book will be placed on automatic preorder.
The characters were such a treat to read as well, you fall in love with Tobias, the MC and his love interest. If you haven’t checked out the authors instagram, Jenna Moreci, you really should before you read, she had artwork done of the characters, and it only adds to the characters allowing you to have a beautiful visual. Each one of the characters throughout the book were diverse, organically diverse like in the real world with actual people, not just made “diverse” just because, and perfectly dynamic. The characters are richly layered with faults and strengths, just like actual people and you root for each one of them for their own story, even while your heart gets ripped out. Let’s not forget the epic romance in the book too, it’s dangerous, its beautiful, it is an actual love story not laced with unhealthy undertones, they truly loved each other in a healthy way.
Overall, the book was INCREDIBLE. The humour layered throughout just helps to create the dynamics with the characters, and it adds a much needed element to the story - the sexual humour, was just perfection. The violence was executed in a way that wasn’t overtly gory, even though the book has ALOT of killing and death happening, it’s exciting, honest and believable.
Thank you Jenna for putting this beautifully written novel out into the world, and for allowing us to follow your journey on your YT channel.
